Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • Wonton wrappers (about 24 wrappers)
  • 7 oz (200g) firm, crumbly feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup hot honey (warm, for drizzling)
  • Olive oil or cooking oil, for frying (about 2 cups)

Optional Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley or oregano
  • 1 tsp lemon zest or 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 small jalapeño, finely chopped or 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (for extra heat)
  • 1 tbsp toasted chopped walnuts or pecans (for added crunch)
  • 2 tbsp cream cheese (for a richer filling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: Crumble the feta cheese into a bowl. Add any optional ingredients such as fresh herbs, lemon zest or juice, jalapeños or red pepper flakes, toasted nuts, or cream cheese. Mix gently until all ingredients are well combined to form a creamy, flavorful filling.
  2. Fill the Wontons: Lay out wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Place a small spoonful (about 1 teaspoon) of the feta mixture in the center of each wrapper. Dip your finger into water and moisten the edges of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half or into the desired shape, pressing edges firmly to seal completely, ensuring no air is trapped inside.
  3. Fry Until Golden: Heat oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium-high heat to about 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the filled wontons in batches without overcrowding. Fry each side for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  4. Drizzle with Hot Honey: Allow wontons to cool slightly for a minute. Generously drizzle warm hot honey over the wontons for a sweet and spicy glaze that enhances each bite’s flavor.

Notes

  • Seal wonton edges thoroughly using water or egg wash to prevent opening during frying.
  • Maintain oil temperature around 350°F (175°C) for even frying and to avoid greasy wontons.
  • Avoid overfilling the wontons to prevent bursting or uneven cooking.
  • Serve wontons warm to enjoy the best flavor and texture with the hot honey drizzle.
  • Fresh wonton wrappers work best as they seal better and fry crispier than frozen ones.
  • For a healthier alternative, bake wontons at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden and crisp.
  • Store leftover fried wontons in an airtight container with paper towels to keep them crispy, refrigerated for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze uncooked filled wontons on a baking sheet in a single layer for up to one month and fry directly from frozen, adding 1-2 minutes to cooking time.
  • Reheat leftover wontons in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes to preserve crispiness; avoid microwaving.
