French Toast Suzette

French Toast Suzette is a quick, elegant twist on classic French toast featuring a bright, buttery orange Suzette sauce. Ready in under 20 minutes, this recipe combines rich custard-soaked bread with a zesty caramelized orange glaze for a delightful breakfast or brunch treat. Perfect for family meals or impressing guests, it uses simple pantry ingredients and fresh oranges to create a luscious, flavorful dish that’s easily adaptable to dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Custard

  • 4 slices brioche or thick bread (day-old preferred)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Suzette Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 12 oranges)
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (from fresh oranges)
  • 12 tablespoons orange liqueur (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Suzette Sauce: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add granulated sugar and stir continuously until it caramelizes and turns golden. Carefully pour in fresh orange juice, orange liqueur (if using), and orange zest. Cook the mixture until the sauce thickens slightly, then reduce heat to low and keep warm while preparing the French toast.
  2. Make the Custard: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk or cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until smooth and well combined to create the custard base.
  3. Soak the Bread: Dip each bread slice in the custard mixture, allowing it to absorb the mixture fully but briefly (about 20-30 seconds per side), avoiding sogginess. Ensure both sides are coated evenly by flipping gently.
  4. Cook the French Toast: Heat a small amount of butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Fry each soaked bread slice until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side, achieving a crispy outside and tender inside. Remove from heat.
  5. Combine with Suzette Sauce: Return the cooked French toast slices to the skillet with the Suzette sauce. Spoon the warm sauce over the toast and allow it to simmer together for about one minute, letting the flavors meld beautifully.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale bread for better custard absorption without falling apart.
  • Cook on medium-low heat to ensure even, golden browning without burning.
  • Always use fresh orange juice and zest for the brightest, most vibrant flavor.
  • Limit soaking time to avoid soggy bread—about 20-30 seconds per side is ideal.
  • Carefully caramelize sugar to achieve a silky Suzette glaze without burning.
